Faithfulness of Christ, faithfulness of priests

Under the provocative heading “Faithfulness of Christ, faithfulness of priests”, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed a ‘Year for Priests’, which began on June 19, 2009, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The Holy Father further announced that this special year will be under the patronage of St. John Mary Vianney and has declared him as the Universal Patron of Priests on the occasion of the 150th Anniversary of his death (August 4, 1859). Fondly called the Curè of Ars, he is known for his simplicity of life and great spiritual strength as he faithfully ministered to those in his pastoral care.

St. John Mary Vianney described priesthood in this way: “The priest is not a priest for himself; he does not give himself absolution; he does not administer the Sacraments to himself. He is not for himself, he is for you… The priesthood is the love of the Heart of Jesus.”
