Meeting of Hungarian priests in New York City

On April 6, 2010, within the octave of Easter, the annual “Emmaus” meeting of Hungarian priests was held at the Franciscan St. Stephen of Hungary Parish in New York City.

Fr. Barnabás G. Kiss OFM, delegate for the Hungarian ministry in the United States and Canada and pastor of Holy Cross Hungarian Church in Detroit, Michigan, was the main celebrant. Concelebrants were: Msgr. William Varsányi (Providence, RI); Fr. Kálmán Miskolczy SchP (Devon, PA); Fr. Joseph Erdei OSBM (Matawan, NJ); Rev. Iván Csete (Forestburgh, NY); Fr. Louis Pintye OFM (Fairfield, CT); Rev. László Vas (Passaic, NJ); Fr. Pawel Cebula OFMConv (Bridgeport, CT) and Fr. Kelemen Bezzegh OFM (Szécsény, Hungary), who was warmly welcomed as celebrant of the Holy Week Services at the parish. Fr. Kelemen was accompanied by another friar of his province, Br. Szerafim Kővágó OFM (Budapest, Hungary).

The homilist for the liturgy was the Piarist priest, Fr.  Kálmán Miskolczy, who will celebrate the 65th anniversary of his priestly ordination on July 1st. His reflection centered on the meeting of Mary Magdalene with the Risen Lord. Those present were also encouraged to follow the example of the priestly zeal of St. John Marie Vianney, the patron of the Year for Priests.

After the Mass, lunch was kindly prepared and served by the faithful Hungarian ladies of the parish. The actual Emmaus meeting followed the luncheon and included reports about the various Hungarian ministries represented by the above mentioned priests. Fr. Barnabás presented an overview of the current status of ministries in the United States and Canada, as he had recently visited many of these communities and also celebrated several jubilees and other special occasions. Fr. Louis spoke about the situation in Fairfield and noted that the official services of the Franciscan Friars would be terminating in January 2011. Fr. Joseph related that the circumstances in Matawan are such that the ecclesiastical superiors are deliberating about the future of the shrine. The next topic dealt with the present dilemma at St. Stephen of Hungary Parish in New York. Fr. Pawel is attending to the needs of the community at present. Finally, the Jubilarian Fr. Kálmán shared his thoughts about the Year for Priests.

Following the Emmaus meeting, the Hungarian Catholic League of America held their meeting. In the spirit of the Risen Lord, the participants were renewed and strengthened for their continued ministry to the Hungarian communities.
