Novel Smartphone Application for Receiving the Holy Scripture, Prayer and Reflection on the Daily Gospel

A new approach for Evangelism has been launched on the Holy Scripture Sunday, 25th of September, 2011.

The email version of the Application for Evangelism on Hungarian language was started in 2004 by Fr. István Sándor Horváth, a diocesan priest from Szombathely, Hungary. From now on, a new possibility is provided for receiving the Holy Messages daily via cell phones. The Service developed for iPhone and Android telephone systems makes it possible to read the daily Scripture, Prayer and Reflection, to search for relevant verses in a calendar, to save favorite passages and also to share it all on Facebook.

The application named Evangelium365 is not able to substitute the Bible entirely as reading and understanding the Scripture thoroughly is quite difficult without proper guidance for most of those interested. Features of the application like randomly selectable Biblical passages might make the reader even more confused.

The application targets every one of those who are interested in or missed the Holy Mass of the day and who would still like to receive the liturgy in Canonical order. In addition to the daily Message, reflection and prayer is also provided in the application.

Father István Sándor Horváth comments on the new development:

“I am very pleased with the first Catholic Mobile Application on Hungarian language that can present the Gospel to people and that resembles a new approach to Evangelization. It also bares symbolic significance. Exhorted by Pope Benedict XVI, we talk more and more about new ways to Evangelization. The Holy Father has established a special Apostolic Council for that purpose. I am convinced that the essence of evangelization is to lift the spirit of people so that they may live according to the Gospel. Apostle St. Paul writes in his letter to the Philippians: “Your way of life should be as the Gospel of Christ requires it” (Phil. 1, 27). This goal can be reached by reading the Gospel every day.”

It would be quite burdensome carrying a book like the Bible around every day. As everyone possesses a cell phone today including many young people, it seems advantages making the teachings of the Gospel available to them by phone. Cell phones provide excellent means for Evangelism to the new generations.”

Android telephone owners can find the Evangelium365 Application on the Android Market and those having iPhone system - in the App Store on the internet.
