Say blessings – starting from 1st May

Two Hungarian National Shrines launch initiative of solidarity with the Holy Father

40 years ago Pope Paul VI announced the church of Mátraverebély-Szentkút to be a basilica minor. At the time of Communism, Hungarian Catholics considered this decision as an encouragement by the Holy See. Now with many people intending to isolate Pope Benedict XVI with unjust accusations, the two Hungarian National Shrines of Mátraverebély-Szentkút and Máriapócs call for offering sacrifices for 40 days.

In their appeal, director of the Máriapócs Shrine István Kapin and director of the Mátraverebély-Szentkút Shrine Peregrin Kálmán OFM encourage all benevolent people and faith communities to express their solidarity towards the Pope. They request those joining their initiative to make daily sacrifices of either fasting, prayer or charity for 40 days beginning from the 1st of May. The accompanying self-denial is to be offered for the Holy Father as well as for those attacking him, thus fulfilling St. Peter's urge not to return evil for evil, or insult for insult; but, on the contrary, a blessing.

Those who wish to join the initiative are requested to complete the forms at the websites of the Shrine or by sending e-mails to the Shrines:

pocskegyhely[at]gmail.com
szentkut[at]ofm.hu

As an expression of the solidarity of the Hungarian faithful, a summary of the offerings will be sent to Rome by the Shrines.
